Seating and tables designed by Knightsbridge Furniture have been selected as part of an extensive re-fit of Springhill Hospice in Rochdale, the latest development in a relationship between the hospice management and the Knightsbridge team which stretches back nearly 20 years.

An independent charitable organisation, Springhill Hospice opened in 1989 and provides palliative care for people of all ages with life-limiting illnesses, offering a holistic approach to improving their quality of life and supporting patients and carers coming to terms with extreme physical and psychological challenges.

After a successful application to the Department of Health for refurbishment funding, and with additional help from The Wolfson Foundation, the dining rooms, reception area and kitchen have all just been re-fitted, moving away from the previous institutional feel to a more stylish and contemporary ambience. Dining now takes places amidst fresh colours and soft lighting, whilst informal seating bays are dotted around the hospice – including in the shop and main reception - to provide areas for patients and relatives to sit and socialise away from the clinical environment.

Integral to the new look was the selection of appropriate furniture, and the hospice buying panel was confident that the Knightsbridge Care portfolio could offer the right balance of style and practicality. The widespread use of natural wood and leather upholstery provides evidence of this balance: the reception area now features welcoming easy armchairs and two-seater settees from the Knightsbridge Vienna collection in a soft, supple hide. These sit alongside neat Nova occasional tables and Melrose high-back armchairs, where sleek curves enhance the comfortable seating position.

More examples of Melrose appear in the lounge - including armchairs, tub chairs and matching settees - complemented by supportive Rossetti mid-back chairs and Nova coffee tables, whilst Knightsbridge has also supplied upright chairs from its stackable Katrine and padded, high-back Elliot ranges, arranged in small clusters in the dining area around Gamma wood-finish dining tables.
